Today I am paying homage to a rock n’ roll king whose music spans many decades. A few days ago while driving his iconic voice reached out to me from the radio…
“Big Boys” by Chuck Berry
Sadly, there is no video with this link because “Big Boys” from the album CHUCK was released a few days following Mr. Berry’s passing last month. He was 90 years old. Monday was the first time I heard this song.
Once again I must admit these particular lyrics hold no special meaning to me but the man and his library does. Hearing his music takes me way, way back to when I was a very young girl just beginning to explore music and television and all that was out there ‘tempting’ those of us growing up in the 70’s. One night in particular my cousin and I were having a sleepover at her house and we were supposed to be asleep already but of course were not. We were watching late night television (oh so many choices back then compared to today!!!) against her mother and father’s repeated warnings to ‘quiet down or else’! We loved Soul Train (I think it came on at 11:30 pm?) and any chance we could sneak into the t.v. room to watch we did! The music and the dancing were fascinating to us young girls. And this is where I first saw Chuck Berry perform, sitting in JoAnn’s den, late one Saturday night. Along with Soul Train there was American Bandstand, a daytime show, where we listened to and saw so many of our music idols sing their new songs and unbeknownst to us, witness to precursors to MTV. JoJo, if you are reading this, please tell me you remember those wonderful late nights with me!♥
I am realizing I am no rule follower…no video today and for two days in a row, no lyrics with deep meaning. Perhaps tomorrow I will try to adhere. Regardless of my rebellious ways, this was a fun trip back to my girlhood. I would now like to ask Underdaddy to join me in posting a Song A Day.
That’s what music is supposed to do … bring back memories and emotions, preferably good ones. I think you’re adhering to the spirit of this challenge very well 🙂
